ADVICE FOR BUSINESS ON DEVELOPMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Recent changes in environmental legislation and national policy can have implications for rural businesses. A case in point is the legal protection now afforded to certain animal groups including bats, badgers, water voles and great crested newts. The killing of a protected species or the disturbance of a place that it uses for shelter could, on prosecution, lead to a very substantial fine, or to imprisonment.
Staffordshire County Council’s Environmental Planning Unit holds or has access to information on protected species and habitats, on structures or areas of historical or archaeological importance, and on landscape character and sensitivity within the county. Its staff can also advise on other sources of environmental information that may be of help to you.
For more information on policy issues and the work of the Environmental Planning Unit contact Steve Potter on 01785 277260, email steve.potter@staffordshire.gov.uk
