Climate Change, Farming and Food: from one extreme to another

Date: Monday, 8th September 2008

Description: Climate Change, Farming and Food: from one extreme to another

The planet is getting warmer, our weather is predicted to become more extreme, and the way we manage our farms and the rural landscape will need to keep up. Join researchers from Warwick HRI, the University of Warwick’sdepartment of plant and environmental sciences, to discuss approaches that will enable us to adapt crop and soil management practices to a changing climate.

Programme
13:30 Professor Brian Thomas introduces this event with a short film about water, the most important factor limiting crop production on a global scale. He will then explore the impact of extreme weather events on agriculture and the vulnerability of crops to increasing CO2, temperature changes and diminishing water resources.

14:05 Dr Rosemary Collier will assess the possible effects of climate change on the native and alien pests and diseases of crops grown in the UK.

14:30 Jason Pole and Eman Calleja, researchers from Warwick HRI’s Climate Change Group, will join the panel to answer questions about the impact of climate change on food production in the UK.

Through a range of projects the Climate Change Group aims to identify problems, provide solutions and recognise the opportunities of a changing climate for agriculture and the rural landscape.

There are a limited number of free and discounted event tickets are available.
